contact lens exam

We provide contact lens exams, contact lens fittings, and specialty contact lens evaluations to help patients find the best lenses for their vision, comfort, and lifestyle. Whether you are interested in soft contact lenses, toric lenses for astigmatism, multifocal contacts, RGP lenses, scleral lenses, or monovision, our team can help you choose the right option.

TYPES OF CONTACT LENSES

Soft Contact Lenses

Soft Contact Lenses are made from flexible materials that allow oxygen to reach the eyes, making them comfortable for many patients. Depending on your prescription and needs, soft lenses may be available as daily, weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly replacement lenses.

Toric Contact Lenses

Toric Contact lenses are designed for patients with astigmatism. These lenses are specially shaped to provide clear, stable vision and are available in a variety of soft lens options.

Multifocal Contact Lenses

Multifocal contact lenses help patients who need help seeing both far away and up close. These are often a great option for adults experiencing age-related near vision changes, also known as presbyopia.

RGP Lenses

RGP lenses are made from a firm material that allows oxygen to pass through to the eye while maintaining their shape, they provide sharper vision for patients with higher prescriptions, astigmatism, or certain corneal irregularities.

Scleral Lenses

They create a smooth optical surface and hold a reservoir of fluid between the lens and the eye, they can be especially helpful for patients with dry eye, keratoconus, irregular corneas, corneal scarring, or post-surgical corneas.

Monovision

They are an option for patients with presbyopia, the normal age-related change that makes near vision more difficult. With monovision, one eye is corrected for distance vision and the other eye is corrected for near vision.

Contact Lens Exam FAQ | Bauer Eyecare

What is a contact lens exam?

A contact lens exam is different from a regular comprehensive eye exam. A regular eye exam checks your overall eye health and determines your glasses prescription. A contact lens exam includes additional measurements and testing to make sure contact lenses fit your eyes properly and safely.

During a contact lens exam, we evaluate the shape of your cornea, your tear film, your prescription, and how the lenses fit and move on your eyes. This helps us find the best contact lenses for your vision and comfort.

Why do I need a separate exam for contact lenses?

Contact lenses are considered medical devices, so they require a separate prescription. Even if your glasses prescription seems similar, a contact lens prescription is different because the lens sits directly on the eye.

A proper contact lens fitting helps reduce the risk of discomfort, blurry vision, dry eyes, and complications such as irritation or infection.

How often do I need a contact lens exam?

Patients should have a yearly contact lens exam. Even if your vision seems stable, your eyes can change over time, and your contact lens fit should be checked regularly. Annual exams help keep your prescription current and allow us to monitor for any signs of dryness, irritation, or other contact lens-related problems.

Can I sleep in my contacts?

It is advisable to take the lenses out while sleeping because they can become dry and uncomfortable and lead to issues down the road. It will also make you more susceptible to infections. The most hygienic way to wear contacts is daily wear, where you replace a new lens daily.

Can I use my eyeglass prescription to buy contact lenses?

No. There is a difference between eyeglass prescriptions and contact lens prescriptions

Is it safe for me to clean my contact lenses with tap water?

No. Absolutely not. Tap water contains microorganisms that can harm a cornea, especially a compromised cornea, leading to significant infections.
